‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar & other Eric Carle Favourites’ by Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, Canada is the perfect platform to introduce theatre to young children. The performance is put up in black light theatre style, which is the use of UV lighting, a dark stage, black curtains and fluorescent costumes. The ‘black light’ enables puppets and props to appear on stage as if they are animated on their own. Works especially well on the littler ones! Plus innovative shadow puppetry and creative props, the little ones get to see some of their favourite Eric Carle stories come to life!
The 5yo daughter was only too excited to share with her Dad that she knows how the events are going to unfold for ‘The Mixed Up Chameleon’ and ’The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.
The cub, at 6+ years old, does feel somewhat overaged especially for the ‘Little Cloud’. He wondered, “uhhh Mommy, what’s the point of this?” while the Little Cloud is morphing into various objects. 😅 #growinguptooquickly
Even though the cub got a tad bored with the performance (cos he felt it was more for little children and he’s a big kid now), I was most pleased to know he shifted his focus to the music instead. IMO, music is a huge part of theatre performances as it sets the tone and atmosphere of the different scenes. The cub was quick to note whenever different music themes, or low / high keys were played. There’s always something to learn from every experience, if you look hard enough. #proudmama
Do stay for the Q&A session as the theatre production people will share more about the work that goes behind the scenes to put together a theatre performance. Love that the kids got to see how some of the puppets work.
‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar & other Eric Carle Favourites’ will be performing at the Victoria Theatre from 6 Oct 2017 to 15 Oct 2017. Check out sistic for booking details.
