We managed to catch one of the KidsFest performances, The Snail and the Whale when it opened last Friday.
It is the most anticipated show for us because the kids LOVE the book! It still sits right on top of our book popularity chart at home since we got it almost a year ago.
I was curious to see how they could put the story of a great big humpback whale and a tiny snail on stage.
The production team adapted the story to draw parallel between a girl and her father who serves on a military ship abroad. Like the tiny snail, the little girl wishes to travel the world with her father who is in the Navy but couldn’t because her dad says it’s too dangerous. The story comes to life as the father sends a recording of the little girl’s favourite story, The Snail and the Whale to her while he’s away.
It was a very heartwarming adaptation of the book. Just like how the tiny snail saved the great big humpback whale in the book, the little girl saved her dad from the feeling of loneliness with the snail plush she had asked him to bring along to keep him company in place of her. At least, that’s what I felt!
I especially love how they managed to incorporate all the lines from the book as well as it meant I could sing along and nudge the kids whenever we were getting to the parts that they liked particularly! After all, I have read the book for 21985 times! They get very tickled with the bit on the itchy foot every time.
A wonderful production! The kids had a good time watching and laughing to the show. I hope they bring it back next year!
