CATS WAS SPECTACULAR! Little wonder why they are one of the longest running shows in the histories of Broadway and West End with the splendid performance.
CATS, one of the greatest musicals of all times, is composed by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber (who’s the man behind The Phantom of the Opera as well!), based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot. For the benefit of those who haven’t watched CATS before like me, here’s the short and sweet story:
This is about a tribe of Jellicle cats who gather together for their annual Jellicle Ball. They take turns to tell their stories to the Old Deuteronomy, the wise and benevolent patriarch of the tribe. And he must decide who would be the one to journey to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn to a new Jellicle Life.
My favourite has gotta be the flamboyant Rum Tum Tugger! He was absolutely outstanding in his performance. The way he moved was so captivating, I sat up every time he appeared. Given my fear of cats, this is possibly the ONLY time you will hear me declare my love for a cat.
Look out for other cute characters like this one, Magical Mr. Mistoffelees!
Another highlight of the musical was Grizabella’s emotion-evoking rendition of Memory – the sadness from the remembrance of her glorious past and longing to start a new life. It was so brilliant I felt goosebumps all over me.
Singing and dancing aside, there were plenty of opportunities to see the CATS up close during the performance. Shall not spoil the surprises here, so don’t miss it!
