Banking on our experience as second-time parents and having a busy period at work, the husb took only two weeks off from work this time for my confinement. (He took one whole month off for the first confinement!) Fortunately, we have support from my now-very-experienced family as well.
We didn’t have to deal with the shock of interrupted sleep since Thaddeus has always interrupted our sleep in some way or another. But I gotta admit that I was so dead tired the first night we were home with the 1.5-hourly feeds, I surrendered to formula. By 6am, my body was ready to shut down any time. Thankgod for 24-hour supermarkets, where I got the husb to get a tin of formula! He gave her one feed of formula while I clocked about 3 hours of quality sleep. We have learned not to beat ourselves up just ‘cos we need to turn to formula. Happy parents = Happy kids!
Decent milk supply started coming in on the fourth or fifth day, and we were on 2-hourly feeds. Teanne has the habit of dozing off while nursing. She just takes one boob of milk and naps. I tried to force her to nurse on both sides in the hope of earning me some extra rest time as well, but she’s another stubborn one. Must be our genes!
Recently, Teanne becomes insatiable during the period of 10pm – 1am. I’d be nursing her almost every 45-60 minutes but she refuses to sleep. She’s a loud-wailer so I try not to let her cry too long for fear of waking Thaddeus up. Yet, I don’t want to have her develop a habit of us carrying her to sleep all the time.
This is especially exhausting when the husb is away for work because I use this period of time when Thaddeus is asleep to pack the toys (usually thrown all over the floor), wash/sterilize bottles and pumps, and take a bath. So the later she sleeps, the later I can start on these. I was reminded by mommy-friends that I could give her formula since that can last her longer. It worked! Now, I’d give her a formula feed once she fusses non-stop after 10pm and put her to bed. That gives me time to do all the baby chores and some me-time when the husb is around to help out. When she wakes some 4 hours later, I’ll go back to nursing her again to keep the milk supply going.
Having two is really much more tiring. With one, you can rest when the little one is asleep. With two now, Teanne may require me to nurse during Thaddeus’ nap and when Teanne takes her naps, I try to spend some quality time with Thaddeus by playing with him so that he doesn’t feel that Mommy is with his babysis all the time. With the ratio being 2:2, I can’t rely on the husb to do things for me as often since he has to focus on Thaddeus whenever Teanne is attached to me. And Thaddeus requires A LOT of attention at this age.
This post took me almost a week to complete ‘cos I only had little pockets of time to write every now and then. But all that said, nothing beats watching them grow up healthily and happily..despite the fatigue! We will find the balance soon enough. 🙂
