We had put aside our plans and preparation work for M&M to look after Matt during the weekend before the last. Hence, we cramped our outstanding errands into last Saturday.
What does the glucose tolerance test involve?
The test recommended for diagnosing gestational diabetes is called the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). It’s usually carried out when you are 24 to 28 weeks pregnant, unless you’ve had gestational diabetes before, in which case you’ll be offered a test at 16 to 18 weeks and then again at 24 to 28 weeks.
You will be asked to eat normally in the three days leading up to the test. The evening before the test you must stop eating before 10 pm and not have anything to eat or drink, apart from water, until the test the next day. If you are on medication, check with your doctor whether it is safe for you to keep to your dose while you are starving yourself ready for the test. You’ll need to attend a special clinic or laboratory where the test will be carried out.
On arrival, a nurse will take a blood sample from you. If you are very nervous about giving blood, ask your partner or a friend to stay with you. The first blood sample is used to measure the level of sugar in your blood when you have been fasting and is called a baseline test.
You will next be asked to drink a very sweet, sugary mixture, containing the equivalent of 75 grams of glucose, and your blood will then be tested two hours later and the measurement compared with the normal range. During the two hour wait, you should sit quietly and not smoke.
It’s reassuring to remember that most women who have sugar in their urine at their prenatal appointment turn out to have normal blood sugar levels in the glucose tolerance test.
Bumped into our couple friend after first prick was done and had breakfast together. Actually, they ate while I watched cos I could only eat after the second blood test is done. Oh wells, at least we had some good company during the 2-hour wait. By the time we were done, it was time to return to the clinic. It was a relief to know that all’s good!
With that out of the way, I shared with my gynae on the pain I have in my right hip since one week ago. It got progressively painful and now I have to walk with a limp. I have difficulties turning when I lie in bed. Every little turn is PAIN. In Cantonese, we describe such pain as 入心入肺. (I know childbirth is most probably going to be 100000 times worse, but I’ll deal with that when that comes.)
Everyday is a struggle starting from home because our room is on the 3rd floor. Every step up or down is a pain, literally. Every other day, my tailbone area will ache terribly as well because I had walked too much during the day.
Dr Beh thinks that the scoliosis probably aggravated this symptom. It seems like there’s nothing we can do about it and it will only get worse as the tummy grows bigger. After some discussion, we decided to see if resting as much as possible can help improve the condition. Two days have passed but it seems that the pain is not subsiding. 🙁
Anyway, we strive to clear as much to-dos as we can. Next stop was to pick up my ASOS purchases from Janice. Her new place looks gorgeous! Totally had us looking forward to our place being ready, but that’s going to be at least 3 years later.
Then we met up with our honeymoon kakis to get some insurance coverage for M&M. No joke having to be responsible for another life now. We have to take into consideration many more factors and anticipate more changes for the many decisions in our lives now that these would affect not only the husb and I, but our kid as well. We have to think much more far ahead as well. I know we can’t be prepared for everything in life but we just have to do our best, within our means.
Finally, we went to PF‘s to get our pre-loved Stokke and walker. She gave us a demonstration on how to use the stroller and made sure that the husb knew exactly how to use/keep it before we can leave their place! Fortunately, the husb was a quick learner so we even managed to squeeze in a lovely catchup over cake with The Seahs, including Kristy, after the tutorial.
A very fruitful, albeit painful day for me, but I’m glad we got much sorted out for M&M!
