The past week 17th had been filled with a couple of rather new symptoms – leg cramps, loosening joints and eczema.
I don’t think I have had leg cramps before pregnancy but I’ve seen the husb experiencing it many times, especially on nights when he played soccer earlier! There was always a tortured look of pain when that happens and I couldn’t empathize then. After getting a few combos, I know how agonizing it can be. Plus the back and neck aches which sometimes cause tension headaches, I wake up with pain from head to toes literally on some days. It feels like I fought a battle during my sleep too.
Went to see a GP and her advice was:
- Don’t just lie on one side of your body. Keep changing your position to find the best position that works for you.
(I had told her that I usually lie on my left because that was the advice from pregnancy websites and mums. However I get some aches because of the position.)
- When you stretch your feet during sleep, remember to pull the feet towards you instead of outwards.
(But stretching it outwards is a natural body reaction when you want to stretch your legs!)
My response to the GP: “That’s a lot of things to remember while I sleep.” She looked at me and said, “No choice.” SIGHHH!!
To prepare the body for childbirth, the muscles are stretched and the joints are loosened. Recently the joints do feel more loose to me. When I sit cross-legged on my bed for awhile, I find my knees in pain as I stand up straight and walk. I feel like an old woman these days.
I have atopic dermatitis and they usually flare up when I travel to cold, dry countries or when the air is bad in Singapore. So it wasn’t a surprse when eczema flared up again at the usual spots – the back of my knees, during lunar 7th month with the buring of incense paper right outside our place. They subsided quickly when I applied very thin layer of steroid cream to stop the itch and dry the patch. (Just in case you are wondering, I had the gynae’s approval of course!)
But now that the lunar 7th month has ended, I have even more areas affected by eczema.
What I thought initially was some mozzie bites turned out to be a furious case of eczema on my fingers and feet. The areas between my fingers and toes are not spared and these places are so damn hard to scratch! My toes and fingers swell because of the rash but they also look like they are having water retention too. I can’t differentiate! They can be so itchy I have to wake up (without opening my eyes) and put medication. How annoying is that! As if I don’t have enough reasons to interrupt my sleep now.
As first time parents-to-be, the husb and I are naturally quite uptight about every other symptom or pain I experience. Between the last scan and gynae visit at 15th week and the detailed scan and gynae visit scheduled at 20th week, we find that the lapse was abit too long for us to bear. I’ve to admit I’m a little paranoid too. After all, we can’t see or hear what’s going on inside my tummy! So I called the clinic and fixed a last minute appointment to do the scan and see the gynae about my eczema.
It was reassuring to hear the heartbeat and see M&M again, this time in a different position. He usually faces upwards but this time, he was facing downwards when we did the scan. Once again, we saw the little organ that tells us the gender and our gynae said he is now 95% sure M&M is a boy. Ha!
Edit: Oh look! I have almost all the symptoms.
